Gambia News

The news media landscape in The Gambia is striving to solidify the gains made since the end of the repressive era dominated by the previous regime. For decades, Gambian journalists operated under extreme duress, defined by harsh censorship, arbitrary arrests, media shutdowns, and profound harassment. While the country’s 1997 Constitution enshrines freedom of the press and expression, the practical application of these rights has historically been tenuous, illustrating the classic disconnect between legal statute and political practice.

The post-2016 government has allowed an ecosystem of private media to emerge and operate with vastly increased liberty. Where state-owned media, such as the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS), once monopolised information flow, independent outlets now provide vital critical analysis. Newspapers like The Standard and the long-established Foroyaa have flourished, offering platforms for diverse perspectives previously suppressed. However, this progress is constantly tested by legacy laws. Despite the constitutional guarantees, archaic legislation on criminal libel, sedition, and false news conveyance remains on the books, often used as tools to intimidate and silence journalists who pursue sensitive political or corruption-related stories.

Crucially, the threats to press freedom have evolved to include the digital sphere. The former government notoriously relied on severe internet blackouts and sophisticated digital surveillance to control the flow of information during periods of political instability. While the use of outright internet shutdowns has diminished, concerns persist regarding proposed social media regulations and the potential for governments to use data localisation and monitoring capabilities to track and harass critical voices operating online.

Within the context of West Africa, Gambia's journey is notable. The rapid improvement in press freedom rankings since 2017 highlights a commitment to democratic reform arguably stronger than in some of its immediate neighbours facing internal conflict or severe centralised control. Yet, the persistent use of non-physical coercion, such as lengthy legal battles, arbitrary arrests based on outdated statutes, and economic pressure, serves as a constant reminder that structural impediments remain.
