Despite having one of the world's fastest growing economies, Zambiaremains one of the world's poorest countries with close to 64% of its people living under the poverty line. It is estimated that 1,300,000 children in Zambia have lost either one or both of their parents and children, in general, are marginalised in Zambia. They are often neglected by their families, merely seen as a way of generating income with boys forced into harsh manual labour and girls pushed into commercial sex work in order to raise income for their families. Children in Zambia are also often accused witchcraft forcing them out of their families and communities making them even more vulnerable to exploitation. Education for these children doesn't even get a look in.
In Zambia, the prevalence rate of stunting is 35% (2018), although down from 40% in 2014. A further 9% of children have a low birth weight of less than 2.5 kg. Although some progress is being amde, the health care
system is under-developed especially in rural areas and this is
compounded by the rural population having limited access to improved
drinking water at just 36%. Child sponsor
programs in Zambia work with orphaned and abandoned children, prevention of
diseases and promoting HIV awareness, promoting education and access to
healthcare and assisting in developing water projects and sustainable farming
methods.
