Nevertheless Mauritius in 63th place out of 191 countries and territories in 2021 when ranked in terms of life expectancy, literacy, access to knowledge and the living standards of a country placing it firmly in the top half of the global scale and, unless you know where to look, you may never seen the problems.

Most volunteer work in Mauritius focuses on conservation and preservation projects with organisations becoming increasingly concerns at man's impact on the environment. (Remember Mauritius was the only home of the Dodo; a bird which became extinct within 80 years of man's arrival.) Other volunteer work opportunities are available working with some of the island's orphaned children and helping disadvantaged families access education and health care provision.

Please note that many volunteer opportunities in Mauritius were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic which led to the permanent closure of some volunteer opportunities and restrictions on others.
