One of the major challenges facing Cameroon apart from the spread of AIDS, is safe and secure water as 75% of schools in some areas have no toilets or washing facilities and 44% in rural communities have access to safe water. This leads to many girls not attending school and getting educated in a country where females are seen to be best deployed in the home in any event. Volunteer work programs in Cameroon focus on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention within a broader health care roll-out, working with orphans and education as well as some conservation and preservation volunteer work opportunities. If you are considering some volunteer work in Cameroon leave time to explore this lesser known area of Africa with its contrasts between waterfalls, sea and desert; its abundance of animals, safari opportunities and rich cultural heritage. Bear in mind a couple of things; firstly transport infrastructure is underdeveloped where it exists at all; most people in Cameroon have an outright distrust of anyone taking photographs and the local officials have been known to be obstructive unless you are willing to bribe them!
