Child Sponsor Programs

Child sponsor programs, organisations, charities, and projects where you can sponsor a child in need in Gaza, Yemen and Haiti, with details of international emergency appeals. The African Volunteer Network is primarily concerned with children in Africa; however, children's needs are universal, and few children are in need more than those in Gaza, Yemen and Haiti. As such, this section of the site explores sponsorship opportunities for these children together with insights into their daily lives.

UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund) describes child poverty as "those who experience deprivation of the material, spiritual and emotional resources needed to survive, develop and thrive, leaving them unable to enjoy their rights, achieve their full potential or participate as full and equal members of society."

Some of the facts behind this are disturbing:

  • HIV/AIDS has created more than 14 million orphans - 92% of them live in Africa
  • About 246 million children work, with 171 million of these in hazardous conditions
  • 134 million children between the ages of 7 to 18 have never been to school
  • Six million children under five die every year as a result of hunger
  • In the last decade, more than 2 million children have died as a direct result of armed conflict with 300,00 child soldiers currently operating around the world

Below is a map showing where children in need are primarily located across the world. As the graphic clearly shows, most of these children in need are located in sub-Saharan Africa, Yemen, the Middle East and Asia with pockets in central and south America. Whilst this website is primarily concerned with child sponsor opportunities for children in Africa we also extend out listings to other children in need who live in Haiti, Yemen and Gaza. You can find out more about how to help these children in need through the the sponsor programs below. If you run your own child sponsor program for please tell us about it by submitting your free listing to share your project with the wider world!

Child Sponsor Programs

Current estimates are that one in two children across the world live in poverty, some one billion children, with Africa and South-East Asia having the highest levels. There are many causes of child poverty, with most children affected coming from poor families. Those causes range from micro factors such as poor education, disability, lack of resources such as arable land to macro factors such as war, disease and government policy, both national and international.

There are many ways to make a difference at www.african-volunteer.net; however, to actually sponsor a child is one of the most rewarding. Gone are the days when the idea of becoming a sponsor to a child meant that one child is a village was selected to benefit from 'western' money. That's all changed now. Today, when you sponsor a child, you are not only making a difference to that child, but also to his or her community as well, as some of the help goes directly to the young person, but within the context of where he or she lives.

So, when you sponsor a child, where does your money go, and how much does it cost? Your money goes on ensuring the young person receives health care and education that will take them through to adulthood with the necessary skills and knowledge to be self-sustaining and with the health to ensure they can provide for themselves, their family and community. And the cost? Often as little as just 50p a day.

People often ask themselves, 'If I sponsor a child, will it make a real difference?' Consider this. There was a doctor who helped others who were victims of the Bali bombing and, being one of the first on the scene, was able to save the lives of many. It turned out he had been a sponsored child and, without the help of someone like yourself, would never have had the opportunity to train to be a doctor and save others. Makes you think, doesn't it? And remember, all those images on the television about starving children are stereotypical (though often true).

Most of these kids, however poor, have a cracking sense of humour and have aspirations for a better life. Without you that's probably beyond their reach so your sponsorship will make a real and meaningful difference practically overnight and the child/ren you sponsor will be deeply appreciative that you have come into their lives and opened doors for them, such as giving them an education that will help them make the most of their own future. They may never meet you, though they could, but they know in their hearts you are there for them, helping them to secure a better future. Please note that in the twelve years we have been online, we promote child sponsor programs and opportunities regardless of race, religion or creed but purely based on children's needs.

Above we detail child sponsor programs in the much-needed countries and territories of Haiti, Yemen and Gaza, together with the lives of children who live there.
