Guinea has one of the lowest literacy rates in the entire world with, according to the most recent figures, an adult literacy rate of 32% reflecting a male literacy rate of 43.64% and 21.96% for females. This is doubtless because only 53% of children in Guinea between the ages 7-12 actually attend primary school (57% boys, 48% boys.) In Guinea life expectancy is
around 61.60 years (2019) and whilst the country's HIV prevalence rate is lower than that of other countries in the region, it remains a major public health concern with 59,000 being left without parental care because of the virus out of a total orphan population in the country of some 400,000 children. In addition to the street children who roam the
capital of Conakry in search of an income, an estimated 73% of the child population in Guinea is
engaged in work to help their families survive. If all this sounds pretty grim,
bear in mind that this poor country also hosts thousands of refugees from neighbouring countries.
There are very few child sponsor programs in Guinea however, those that do exist, focus on supporting families, working with orphaned and homeless children, education
projects including the building and equipping of schools and developing health care programs
addressing nutrition and HIV awareness. They need your help to make a
better future for the children there. You can help when you sponsor a
child in Guinea Conakry.
