Situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo

This video documentary explores the current situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo following decades of conflict that have left more than five million people dead, over a million displaced, and many more, particularly in the east of the country, leaving in daily fear for their lives. Despite a peace agreement in 2003 after what was termed 'Africa's World War', the UN maintains over 16,500 uniformed peacekeepers in the country.

The war, and ongoing conflict, flamed in part by the Lord's Resistance Army, effectively led to the collapse of the country's economy and infrastructure and whilst to some extent there are now improvements, as this video demonstrates, life for hundred of thousands is still unbearable.

As the country re-elected Joseph Kabila as president in 2011, the Democratic Republic of Congo remains home to hundreds of thousands of refugees with most coming from Angola (132,295) then Rwanda (37,313) and Burundi (17,777), Uganda (13,904), the Sudan (6,181) and the neighbouring Republic of Congo (5,243).

Additionally there are still over a million internally displaced people in the country who are particularly vulnerable to the widespread trafficking that remains rife in the country particularly in the east where the government has little control over militia groups and armed rebels. No only doesn't the government have control of the east of the country, it also has little control over the country's banking system where corruption is rife and Kinshasa is known as a money laundering centre.

It is in the east of the country that the situation remains most volatile with, as recently as 2012, an estimated 260,000 people being displaced after eastern Congo rebels seized parts of North Kivu province with the alleged tacit support of the Rwandan government, claims Rwanda strongly denies.
